Surviving a Suicide

Overcoming a Suicide:

  • Allow yourself time to grieve. Don’t deny the pain.
  • Attending the funeral can be helpful in allowing you to accept the death and begin the process of saying goodbye.
  • Be aware of your body’s reactions. Psychosomatic problems may emerge.
  • Do not isolate yourself from family, friends, or other support networks.
  • Do take time and space for private mourning.
  • Recognize that feeling disoriented and disorganized is a normal process of grief.
  • Be aware of guilt feelings that are almost always present after a suicide. (Things such as “I should have known” or “I should have been able to stop them.”)
  • Don’t use drugs and alcohol to avoid the pain.
  • Becoming depressed is not unusual after a suicide. Sometimes survivors of suicide begin to think of suicide themselves. If this occurs, ask for and accept help for yourself.
  • It’s OK to reach out to others to give them support, but don’t use this to avoid your own feelings.
  • Seek out support if you begin to have sleeplessness and/or nightmares.
  • Talk out your feelings and thoughts.
  • Accept support when someone reaches out to you.
