Marijuana (i.e. Cannabis, pot, weed) is one of the most widely used drugs in the United States. The current trend to legalize cannabis in many states has increased its overall use and has led to an increase in the prevalence of people with Cannabis Use Disorder. Some of the common criteria associated with marijuana abuse are:
- Smoking or ingesting more pot than was intended.
- An inability to cut down or control the cannabis usage.
- Spending more and more time obtaining, using, or recovering from marijuana.
- An increase in craving.
- Decrease in performance at school, work, or home.
- Continued use in spite of consequences for the use.
- Decrease in involvement in activities that aren’t associated with pot usage.
- Increase in tolerance.
Many people that abuse pot believe that it helps them function and that it improves their overall well-being. In reality, however, the more a person abuses marijuana, the more disengaged they tend to become from activities and people that aren’t directly related to the use of the drug. Often those involved in Cannabis use will change their plans and goals in life in order to allow more time and energy to use marijuana. Marijuana usage has been linked to an increase in anxiety and mood disorders, a decrease in cognitive functioning, impairment in concentration and memory, and an increased risk in psychosis for those with a family history of psychotic disorders.
