To help you determine the best type of counseling that may benefit you, we have listed below the most common types of counseling.
  • Individual Counseling – Individual therapy is typically conducted once per week by a licensed therapist.  This type of treatment is often helpful for individuals who are struggling with emotional, behavioral, relationship, or substance abuse issues.  When seeking outpatient individual counseling, it is important to find a therapist who is knowledgeable about your areas of concern.
  • Couples/Marital Counseling – Couples or marital therapy typically focuses on the problems that exist between a couple.  Counseling tends to focus on teaching couples how to resolve conflicts and on helping them develop effective communication skills.
  • Family Counseling – Family therapy is designed to help families resolve conflicts so that everyone within the family system can get their needs met.  When choosing this therapy, it is important to find a counselor who is familiar with working with family systems.
  • Intensive Outpatient Treatment and Partial Hospitalization – Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Programs typically last for about 4 to 6 weeks.  These programs tend to be between 3 to 6 hours per day for 3 to 5 days per week and are designed to help people who are in crisis.  These programs are often an effective alternative to inpatient psychiatric treatment.
  • Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitalization – Psychiatric hospitalization is designed to help people who are in crisis.  Treatment typically lasts between 3 to 5 days and focuses on helping people stabilize in a controlled environment.
  • Detox – Medically monitored detox can occur in both inpatient and outpatient settings.  The type of detox and location of detox varies based on the type of substance and the level of addiction.  A trained clinician can help you determine the appropriate steps to take.
  • Drug and Alcohol Rehab – Inpatient rehab is typically 30 days or less.  This type of treatment is often useful whenever a person needs a structured environment to break the addiction cycle.  The advantage to this type of treatment is that individuals are removed from their current environment and their access to alcohol and drugs is removed.  They are also given the opportunity to learn about addiction and develop the tools they need to overcome their addiction.
  • Residential Alcohol and Drug Treatment – Residential alcohol rehab can be as short as 30 days and up to a year or longer.  This type of treatment is often useful whenever a person has had multiple substance abuse treatment episodes and has been unable to sustain their sobriety.  The advantage to this type of treatment is that individuals have an extended period of time to develop the habits and tools that they may need to effectively cope with their addiction.
