OCD Symptoms

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can be debilitating if left untreated. Therefore, it is helpful to understand some of the symptoms most commonly associated with OCD.

Symptoms of Obsessions

  • An individual with OCD tends to have recurrent, intrusive thoughts that create significant anxiety or distress. For example, an individual with obsessive thoughts may repeatedly think that their hands have germs on them, no matter how many times they wash them. Alternatively, an individual with OCD may have recurrent, intrusive urges or images that create significant anxiety or distress. For example, an individual with OCD may have a repetitive urge to check the lock on the door, even though they know that it is locked or they may have a repetitive intrusive image of stabbing someone or hurting a child.
  • Individuals with these obsessions make repeated attempts to ignore or suppress these obsessions but are unable to do so.

Symptoms of Compulsions

  • An individual with OCD tends to feel driven to perform repetitive behaviors to manage the obsessive thoughts. For example, an individual who obsesses about germs may wash their hands repeatedly, even to the point of severely irritating the skin on the hands. Alternatively, a person who feels anxious about the lock on the door may check the lock repeatedly and be unable to walk away.
  • Individuals with OCD often recognize that their actions are excessive and irrational, but they are unable to stop them.
