Helping Others Survive Suicide

How to help others through the grief and loss of suicide:

  • Offer support, love, and concern.
  • Don’t try to comfort by denying the facts or by using expressions such as “it was God’s will or “time will make everything better.”
  • Put aside your own personal views of suicide and be with those who are grieving in caring and nonjudgmental ways.
  • Do not attempt to stop the grieving by telling someone to “snap out of it.”
  • Listen often and long.
  • Allow the bereaved the time to express their feelings at their own pace.
  • Be aware of unusual talk or behavior that might indicate that the bereaved might be becoming suicidal.
  • Help the bereaved get through the anniversary of the suicide or other special days that might be associated with the loss.
  • Accept that grieving takes time, but that time isn’t the thing that heals the pain. Grieving is the process by which the pain is healed.
