As the diagnosis of anxiety has risen in our society, more and more people have been prescribed Benzodiazepines in order to help them cope with their feelings of stress or anxiety.
- Alprazolam (Xanax)
- Diazepam (Valium)
Benzodiazepines can be a useful medication for treating anxiety, but it can lead to addiction if abused. Even when taken as prescribed, dependence may easily be created if a person develops a tolerance to the drug. As tolerance is created, more use of the drug is necessary in order to obtain the therapeutic benefits. Some research indicates that after 4 months, the therapeutic benefit of Benzodiazepines may diminish for some people. This can increase their risk of dependence. Benzodiazepine dependence occurs when an individual finds it difficult to halt the use of a Benzodiazepine based drug without psychological or physiological withdrawal symptoms occurring.
