Alternative to Psychiatric Hospital
While everyone’s situation is unique, we have listed below a few general guidelines that can help you determine where to start your search for counseling services.
There are times when an admission into a psychiatric hospital can be life-saving. Inpatient hospitalization requires a person to stay overnight in a psychiatric facility and allows for staff to monitor their conditions 24 hours per day. Unfortunately, because the criteria for admission into an inpatient psychiatric hospital is often very narrow, the length of stay is frequently less than 5 days. Inpatient hospitalization is often appropriate if a person is experiencing any of the issues listed below:
- Imminent danger to yourself
- Imminent danger to others
- Unable to function in an outpatient setting
- Actively psychotic
- Severe episode of bipolar disorder (mania or depression)
- Unable to get medications regulated in an outpatient setting
- Need for medical supervision while detoxing
- Unable to stay sober in an outpatient setting
What happens after being discharged from an inpatient psychiatric hospital?
Many people benefit from additional treatment after being discharged from an inpatient hospital. They may still be experiencing many of the symptoms that led to their hospitalization and may need additional help in getting their medications stabilized. Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) allow people to continue to receive intensive treatment and support as they return home. PHPs and IOPs can help people develop the coping skills they need which can decrease the likelihood of future hospitalizations.
New Dimensions Provides Alternative to Hospitalization
New Dimensions Day Treatment Centers offers treatment programs that are often an effective alternative to inpatient psychiatric hospitals or residential treatment programs. Our programs are designed to allow individuals to receive intensive counseling without having to stay overnight in a psychiatric hospital. While not everyone is appropriate for PHP or IOP services, many people are able to work through significant emotional distress without having to attend an inpatient psychiatric hospital. PHP and IOP is often appropriate if a person is experiencing any of the issues below:
- Suicidal thoughts
- Severe depression
- Severe anxiety
- Bipolar issues
- Behavioral problems
- Inability to get medications regulated
- Severe low self-esteem
- Substance abuse
- Inability to make significant improvements in outpatient therapy
If weekly individual therapy is not enough and inpatient psychiatric hospitalization is not appropriate, New Dimensions can help.
