What is a Mental Breakdown?

A Mental Breakdown is a common way of describing an episode where a person has difficulty functioning mentally and/or emotionally. This “mental breakdown” is often a combination of severe depression and anxiety. Some of the common symptoms are:

  • Hopelessness
  • Irritability
  • Anxiousness
  • Uncontrollable worry
  • Helplessness
  • Panic Attacks
  • Depressed mood
  • Rumination
  • Obsessiveness
  • Uncontrollable crying
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Unable to concentrate or make decisions
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Thoughts of dying
  • Fear of losing control
  • Inability to think clearly
  • Uncontrollable crying
  • Fear of “going crazy”
  • Inability to function

Alternatively, a person who is experiencing a “mental breakdown” could be experiencing a psychotic episode. During a psychotic episode, a person begins to lose touch with reality. They may begin to hallucinate, become paranoid, or have difficulty distinguishing between their own thoughts and the reality of life around them.
